Tips for a safe and fun 4th of July

Happy 4th of July!  Independence Day is the summer holiday; full of grilling, fireworks, swimming pools and maybe an adult beverage or two.  We want all our fans and customers to enjoy a festive AND safe day with family and friends.  July 4th has some great traditions and if you take care and stay alert, you can enjoy those traditions safely.  Here are some tips to ensure your 4th of July celebration is fun for all your family and guests.

Grilling: Everybody loves a good BBQ.  If you have an outdoor deck there are some things you should do to ensure your deck stays in good condition and your grill is safe.

  • Check gas grill hoses for cracks, holes and leaks.
  • Keep the grill at least two feet away from decks, siding, branches and any outdoor equipment that can catch fire quickly.
  • Consider putting down a protective mat or stone under your grill to prevent staining or heat damage.
  • Always keep a portable fire extinguisher close by. Also keep a water hose or buckets of water nearby to put out fires.

Fireworks:  Fireworks are one of the best traditions of the 4th of July celebration.  Many communities stage big shows you can take the kids to enjoy.  Sparklers or other small fireworks are fun but must be handled with caution and under adult supervision always.
  • Don’t point sparklers, or fireworks at yourself or others, especially while they’re being lit.
  • Once spent, put the used sparkler down into a bucket of sand or dirt to make sure it has a chance to cool before disposing of the wire.
  • Only light fireworks on the ground and in areas that are dry and fire resistant.
  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks or sparklers.
  • Keep a water hose or buckets of water nearby to put out fires.

As a reminder, don’t miss the MtAiry fireworks display on July 3rd at the Mt. Airy CarnivalGrounds.  Sounds like the start of a great new tradition for Mt. Airy families!

Have a fun and safe holiday and throw something yummy on the grill!
